Several peat bodies have been discovered in and around Chat Moss dating from the iron age. The history of this area of Wales, known as the Welsh Marches, goes back centuries, and from the moment you lift off you will see why many have fought for possession of this beautiful part of Britain. Following the River Severn south, sat on a wooded ridge overlooking the valley is Dolforwyn Castle. Built by LLywelyn the Last between 1273 and 1277, for £174.6s 8d. it caused a great deal of conflict between him and the English as he didn't get permission from Edward I, so it was seized not long after the last stone was laid!
You then will pass over the historic county town of Montgomery with its pretty Georgian architecture and castle built in the 13th century, and the centre of many conflicts. The castle was fought over many times beacuse of its strategic importance and remained in use right up to 1647 when is was demolished. In the churchyard is the famous ‘Robbers Grave’, before John Davies was hung he swore no grass would grow on his grave for 100 years as a sign of his innocence and it didn’t. Heading north, below us is Hen Domen, a small mound now but the original motte and bailey site of Montgomery Castle. Look to the right and you will see the Shropshire hills and Corndon, an area of outstanding natural beauty before heading over Long Mountain and Offa’s Dyke. As we head back to the airport you can't miss Powys Castle with it's red sandstone walls it was the fortress home of a dynasty of Welsh Princes and was visited by Queen Victoria when she was a child.

This flight takes you over a stunning part of Wales that most people just don't know about! The first thing that you'll see is the impressive sandstone mansion of Powis Castle as we head towards the serenity of the mountain locked Lake Vyrnwy valley. On route you will pass over the village of Meifod, where it is said that many of the Kings and Princes of Powys are buried. In the distance you will see Cadar Idris, the chair of Idris the Giant. There are 31 rivers and waterfalls that run into the lake, its waters supply Liverpool and are used to make Bombay Sapphire Gin. From there we continue over the forest covered hills to the waterfall of Pistyll Rhaeadre, the highest in England and Wales before returning over the beautiful Berwyn Mountains and down the Severn Valley to Welshpool. We then follow the coast along the Severn estuary to Chepstow, which was a major strategic point for centuries, and was a key location for the Normans. The Castle, perched on the cliff top above the river Wye, is said to be the oldest surviving stone castle in Britain.
Tracking North we follow the river Wye as it passes through a limestone gorge. It is the fifth longest river and the third best for salmon in Britain. It has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world and was established as a boundary between England and Wales way back in 928.
We then reach the picturesque Tintern Abbey, one of the greatest monastic ruins of Wales founded by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow, on 9 May 1131. Falling into ruin after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century , the Abbey has been celebrated in poetry and paintings from the 18th century.
The Cistercian monks (or White Monks) who lived at Tintern followed the Rule of St. Benedict, with the basic principles being obedience, poverty, chastity, silence, prayer, and work. Doesn’t sound like much fun does it, but this austere way of life made the Cistercians one of the most successful orders. One of the monks, Henry, formerly a robber, repented of his ways, took the Cistercian habit and was duly appointed second abbot of Tintern. Just goes to show there hope for us all!
Then we retrace our steps back to Cardiff back along the Severn and the far reaching views across the Bristol Channel.
